It was a great pleasure and a lot of work to put together my portfolio of a sample some
of native birds from the Tutukaka coast area. I have featured some of my favourite birds
especially the Tui around the house in among the native trees. Watching the Tui through
the seasons is very interesting, especially the mating times when they become very
territorial and protective of their nesting area and including their private bird bath.
The New Zealand Pied Shags are also a favourite as I often see them when going on my
favourite walk to Rahomaumau Island via Dolphin Bay, the Ngunguru Estuary and the
Northern end of Matapouri beach through the gap. Their colony is based in Tutukaka
Harbour. They are quite approachable if you are stealthy.
The Ngunguru Estuary is an example where birds and people appear to be somewhat in
harmony as there are several different species of birds in the area close to human
activity, dwellings and roads.
