Exhibition Fee
Exhibition Spaces
We have 2 exhibition spaces both of which you get to use:
In effect you get 2 exhibitions for the price of one. Once your exhibition in the main gallery is over you get a second exhibition in the rear gallery.
Your second exhibition can simply be a subset of the first one. But that’s not the only option. You can also:
Dates and Schedule
The exhibition before yours finishes on the Saturday before your opening date. The previous exhibitor will have that Saturday to get their work down, You can come in on the Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, to hang your exhibition and be ready to open on the Wednesday. There will need to be some coordination between yourself, the previous exhibitor and us to make sure this all happens smoothly.
Frames
If you want to use frames we advise exhibitors to use frames of the same size and colour for a coherent visual appearance. We suggest black A3 frames which can be bought at Kmart/Warehouse quite cheaply and are sufficient for an exhibition without breaking the bank. You can hang around 24 to 30 frames on the walls without it looking crowded, less or more if you wish. Have your framed prints ready to hang before your exhibition.
You also forego frames and mount your prints on foamcore or something similar
Printed Information Sheets
Prepare some printed material to inform viewers about the work on the walls. This can be something like the title of the work and a short blurb about the artist and maybe some technical details. Usually 2 or 3 such sheets at various places is sufficient.
Sales
The Shutter Room does not take commission on sales.

Gallery Layout
You can arrange the layout of your exhibition in any way you see fit as long as we can accommodate it. We have a basic music player at the gallery and a few classical CDs. You are free to bring your own music system and play your own choice of music.
Sitting With Your Exhibition
We encourage all exhibitors to spend as much time with their exhibition as they possibly can. By doing this you will get to see visitors reactions first hand. Obviously this will not be possible for everyone. We do have a roster of volunteers but you will need to coordinate this with the gallery admin.
Opening
There is usually an opening event where you invite family, friends and fellow members. Some people prefer to have this before the exhibition opens and others have theirs at the end of the first day. You choose if you want an opening and when.
We encourage you to have your opening on a day when the Quarry Arts Centre and/or Megan Dickinson Gallery also have openings, if possible. A time slot of 5pm to 7pm time works well because people are still in town from work. Below is a typical shopping list for catering an opening.
Typical Opening Shopping List
Most people will be driving so wine consumption is quite conservative. Consider Vegetarians and Vegans in your planning.
PaknSave is the cheapest supermarket in Whangarei.

We have sufficient glasses for an opening.
