SAMPLER

An exhibition by Rita Dibert
July 18th to August 11th 2018

Picture

Rita Dibert is a full-time studio artist living and working in Whanganui. Her photographic flower investigations are intended to offer relief from the tensions of the world situation. They are printed archivally in limited editions. She also still retains an interest in traditional analogue and historical photographic processes and offers workshops in media such as Hand-tinting, Cyanotype and Gum Printing in her studio darkroom.

Rita received her first scholarship as a seven year old, attending the Flint Art Institute. She now holds an Associate in Ceramics from Flint Mott College, a BFA and a MFA in Painting and Printmaking from the University of Michigan. Her second MFA is in Photography and Digital Media from the State University of New York at Visual Studies Workshop, Rochester, NY. Whilst in Rochester she did an internship in exhibitions at George Eastman House as well as an internship at an all news TV station.

Rita held University teaching positions at The University of Michigan (Residential College), Hartwick College (NY), a joint appointment as Artist in Residence to Pomona College and Claremont Graduate School (California), and taught at the University of North Carolina Charlotte before coming to New Zealand.

She designed the BFA photographic facility and curriculum and was the Head of Fine Art Photography at the Quay School of Art in Whanganui from 1995-2015. Rita lives with her greyhound, Mea Moa in a 1906 workers villa where she has planted a small orchard and a variety of flowers which she photographs seasonally.

Rita has work in the collections of Polaroid Corporation (now closed), Toledo Museum of Art, Hyatt Regency, Pratt School of Design, Detroit Institute of Art, Hewlett-Packard Corporation and the Sarjeant Gallery as well as many corporate and private collections throughout the world, including commissions for public spaces and private homes. She was one of the founding artists in Whanganui Artist Open Studios.

Her work has been exhibited in over two hundred one person exhibitions. She also sells her Japanese influenced bags at the Sarjeant Gallery, Whanganui and The Cooperstown Art Society, Cooperstown, NY.
